Dr. Tina Peers

Our Ambassador. A Personal Journey to Pioneering Care

Our story begins with Dr. Tina Peers, whose unwavering dedication to understanding chronic, complex conditions has helped hundreds regain healthier, happier lives.

Her initial journey was deeply personal: unravelling the mystery behind her own daughter’s persistent ill health. A critical turning point came when her daughter, seeking to boost her energy and improve her health, decided to eat only “superfoods.” Unbeknownst to her, these foods were high in histamine and triggered a severe inflammatory crisis, which only worsened the “healthier” she ate.

Dr. Peers embarked on an intensive quest for answers. This led her to a specialist and researcher in mast cell disorders, whose guidance led to the diagnosis of Histamine Intolerance (HIT). This discovery ignited Dr. Peers’ curiosity, and her desire to know and understand more continues to fuel her special interest in Histamine Intolerance and its treatment.

Her research naturally expanded to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). It is estimated that 17-20% of the population suffer from MCAS, and a significant number of them will also have poor histamine metabolism (Histamine Intolerance).  For these individuals, simply managing histamine levels wasn’t enough. She understood that mast cell stabilising medication was crucial, as overactive mast cells can release a “cytokine storm” within the body.  Dr. Peers emphasises, “For treatment to be successful, it has to be done in a slow and stepwise fashion, introducing new medications carefully on low doses. Treatment is not a quick fix.”

Then, with the advent of COVID-19 and the subsequent emergence of Long Covid, Dr. Peers started to notice patients in her menopause clinic who had contracted COVID presenting with symptoms that bore a striking familiarity to those of her MCAS patients. She recognized a strong correlation between the debilitating, multi-system issues of Long Covid and the complex symptoms she had been treating in her MCAS patients. This connection highlighted that severe infections, like glandular fever, chickenpox, or COVID-19, could trigger or exacerbate a chronic inflammatory response, leaving individuals profoundly ill and unable to recover.

Patients consistently shared the same frustrating story with Dr. Peers: their GPs were addressing symptoms individually, leading to referrals to various specialists, but no one was examining their health holistically. Driven by this clear realization that many Long Covid patients were seeing multiple specialists without a comprehensive approach, Dr. Peers began applying her extensive experience in diagnosing and managing HIT and MCAS to help those suffering from this new, prolonged illness, achieving great success.

Her goal was not only to provide direct care but also to guide other healthcare professionals on how to treat these often-overlooked and interconnected conditions.

To this end, Dr. Peers shares her knowledge with patients and the healthcare community, often speaking at conferences, conducting interviews, and appearing on podcasts.
